It is Broken.
Sticking to my Tisha B'av beat
Here’s my latest piece - It is Broken, Lilith Magazine - about trying to sit with our grief, especially when we can’t always fix things [https://lilith.org/2026/07/it-is-broken/]
Tisha B’Av, even though it has now concluded, offers us a chance to sit in our grief as we try to make our way through this broken world.
Eicha, and how is it I always end up writing about food on fast days?
Sometimes editors edit out parts of your writing. So, if you are curious how this over functioning mom solved our daily snack situation, here’s a coda:
“In this case, there was a solution. After searching high and low, I discovered that Target sells a store brand, organic, relatively low sugar but joyfully sweet, surprisingly inexpensive, and incredibly resilient snack bar - just like the toddler I am raising, and the humans we are all striving to be.”

As always, your writing is so beautiful and so wise. At this season of grief, and the first anniversary of the death of my former husband (who was the father of my children), I still feel supported by the sensitive and beautiful ways you supported me, our children, and all who were bereaved. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Great piece, Rabbi Jen. It's hard to walk the fine lines between grieving and wallowing, and between moving on and repressing. I suppose that's where grace comes in. I see kintsugi in your family's future. 😉
